Roseola Infantum

What is Roseola Infantum?

Roseola Infantum is also known as Exanthem subitum, sixth disease. Roseola infantum is contagious viral disease of infants and young children between the ages of 6 months to 2 years.It is caused by human herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6) or, HHV-7. It is characterized by abrupt high fever and mild sore throat. Roseola infantum occurs throughout the year, sometimes in local outbreak,.and affects to both male and female equally. It usually has a duration about 3-5 days and normally does not need any medical treatment.

Causes of Roseola Infantum

  • Two viruses can cause Roseola Infantum- human herpesvirus (HHV) Type 6 , Type 7.

Symptoms of Roseola Infantum

  • Sudden development of a high fever 39°C - 40.5°C (102 - 105°F).
  • Mild runny nose
  • Irritability
  • Red Rash on the body
  • Swollen lymph nodes on the back of the scalp
  • Cough

What are the treatments for Roseola Infantum?

  • Lukewarm baths for high temperature
  • Treat a fever over 38.5ºC with paracetamol
  • For a child give plenty of fluids to drink
  • Give Acetaminophen (Avoid Asprin) and cool sponge bath.
