What is Scarlet Fever?

Scarlet fever is also known as scarlatina. Scarlet fever is an acute, infectious disease caused by an infection with group A streptococcus bacteria. Scarlet fever is characterized by bright red rash, fever, strep throat, and is most common in children between the age of 2 to10. It usually occurs after a strep infection of the throat.It can be passed on through bacteria in airborne droplets from coughs and sneezes.

Causes of Scarlet Fever

  • It is caused by Group A streptococcal bacteria
  • It causes simple angina, erysipelas
  • Strep throat

Symptoms of Scarlet Fever

  • Fever- 38 - 40 degrees C (101 to 104 degrees F)
  • Glands in the neck are often swollen.
  • Vomiting
  • Bone or joint problems
  • Enlarged tonsils
  • Headache
  • White or yellow spots or coating on the throat and tonsils

What are the treatments for Scarlet Fever?

  • Take ibuprofen or Acetaminophen to reduce fever
  • Antibiotics- Erythromycin or clindamycin can be used
  • A 10 days course of either oral or injectable penicillin is normally prescribed.
