Baldness Description

(Male Pattern Baldness)

Loss of scalp hair in men.

Baldness Cause

A very strong sex linked hereditary tendency. Very rare in women, but passes through the female line to men in later generations. Very uncommon in Negroes and Chinese races, but more common in Caucasian men whose ancestors came from northwest Europe (Celts).

Baldness Symptom

Almost always gradual hair loss, starting at the front of the scalp on either side, or in a circular area on top. Usually accompanied by excess hair on the body due to higher levels of testosterone. The connection between baldness and sexual potency is unproven.

Investigation

None usually necessary.

Baldness Treatment

Minoxidil tablets or scalp lotion slow or stop hair loss, hair transplants, scalp flap rotation or a wig.

Prognosis of Baldness

Usually progresses steadily but slowly throughout adult life. Treatments moderately successful.
