Cogan Microcystic Corneal Dystrophy - Symptom, Treatment and cause of Cogan Microcystic Corneal Dystrophy
DESCRIPTION: Degeneration of the cornea, the clear dome over the pupil and iris (coloured part of the eye), with formation of dots, cysts, cracks or other deformities in the normally clear membrane. Many different subtypes known (eg. Cogan microcystic dystrophy, Reis-Bücklersdystrophy, Meesmann dystrophy, Schnyder dystrophy).
CAUSE: Usually an inherited characteristic.
SYMPTOMS: Deterioration of vision due to damage to, and distortion of,the cornea.
INVESTIGATIONS: Eye examined with a magnifying light (ophthalmoscope) to see corneal damage.
TREATMENT: Surgical replacement of the cornea with a transplanted cornea, or laser destruction of abnormalities in the cornea.
COMPLICATIONS: Significant deterioration in vision may occur, and disease may recur in transplanted cornea.
PROGNOSIS: Good results from treatment. Progressive sight deterioration without treatment
